Darius let the current wash him farther downstream, its waves rocking him like a worn, twisted piece of driftwood. Soon, only the moonlight was left to highlight the banks as the city’s lights receded.

There was still no sight of Lex, though he wasn’t sure whether he wanted to see her or not. If she’d made it, surely she’d have lingered near the river when beyond the soldiers’ sights. Or perhaps she was dead. Which would he prefer?

It only took him a second’s thought to realise he’d prefer it if she was alive. She was his guide to Denehill, to the Waif Magician and his restoration. Why did he have to pause to answer? So she’d killed Omid. He had no reason to care.

Yet he did. Why?

Another wolf-fish nipped his thigh. Little bastard. It was time to get out of the water. Darius woke his tired muscles and stroked for the bank. As his feet found the riverbed, a wolf-fish sank its teeth deep into his thigh.

He clamped his jaw against a yell and snatched the thing out of the water, holding it up as it squirmed and tried to wriggle free. Despite its oily skin, his grip didn’t relent.

He tossed the fish onto the shore and limped out after it with a sigh, letting the water drain from his heavy clothes. Finally, he was free of the gnawing wet. He strode through the mud lining the river with slow, heavy steps, past the flapping fish trying desperately to fling itself back into the water. Maybe its chest was caving in just like his had underwater. That’d teach it to bite him.

Bushes littered the riverbank, and he found a somewhat dry spot near one. Settling on the ground, Darius cradled his arm to give his shoulder some much-needed relief.

After a few moments sitting, a foreign sense of concern drifted through his mind, and he smiled. Come to me, Lyra. She was close. Somehow, his escort had known he was in danger and set off at once to meet him by the river. How lucky he was to have her. Being alone right now was the last thing he wanted.

The bush’s leaves would give him some cover, but not so much Lex wouldn’t spot him if she’d made it. Stars speckled the cloudless sky and he watched for any shadows passing overhead that might reveal Tiro searching.

Slapping sounds came from the muddy bank where the wolf-fish still struggled. The wretch deserved it. But still, it was pitiful, so he got up and kicked the fish back into the river. He’d seen enough death for one day.

The light splash soon faded to leave a desolate silence without a hint of the enemy or of Lex. She was lost. Omid was dead. The thought kept striking him like a blow to the chest. He wanted to yell at Lex until her eardrums hurt and then some.

A few minutes passed before Lyra emerged from a bush, her pace slow and sombre as if she shared his mood.
